The easiest way to read on a Chromebook is to use the Online Reader. It is compatible with all major browsers, including Chrome. Simply install one of these browsers (if not installed already) and you can begin reading straight away.
If you wish to download your ebook, if it is DRM-free then you can simply download the ebook file and open it in any ebook reading app.
If the ebook does have DRM applied (the majority of our ebooks have DRM) then we suggest installing our eBooks.com Android app from the Google Play Store.
Alternatively, if you want to install and use Thorium Reader, you can do so, as Chrome OS is based on Linux, but in order to do so you need to enable the "Linux Development Environment" (it is turned off by default). To do so please follow the steps below:
- On your Chromebook, at the bottom right, select the time.
- Select Settings and then About ChromeOS and then Developers.
- Next to 'Linux development environment', select Set up.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Setup can take 10 minutes or more.
- A terminal window opens. You have a Debian environment. You can run Linux commands, install more tools using the APT package manager and customise your shell.
Then to install Thorium Reader go to https://thorium.edrlab.org and download the Debian version of Thorium Reader. It will download a .deb file. Move it to "Linux files" in the Files app, and double-click it to install.
If you change your mind and want to switch off the "Linux Development Environment" please follow these steps:
- At the bottom right, select the time.
- Select Settings and then About ChromeOS and then Developers and then Linux development environment.
- Under 'Remove Linux development environment', select Remove.
