If you are an iOS or Android user we always strongly recommend downloading to our eBooks.com app. It is much easier for us to provide support, and it avoids having to create a separate ByteBooks account to authorise the software.
However if you want, or need, to download to another app for some reason you can do so, provided the app supports either Readium LCP, or Adobe DRM (Digital Rights Management). Examples of apps that support Readium LCP are Thorium Reader (iOS only), PocketBook Reader, Aldiko Reader, etc. Examples of apps that support Adobe DRM are PocketBook Reader, Adobe Digital Editions, etc.
As the operating systems and apps are all different I won't cover the installation instructions for any of the apps.
If you are downloading to an app that supports Adobe DRM then it will require authorisation with a ByteBooks account. But the authorisation should be very similar to authorising Adobe Digital Editions for Windows or macOS. This step is not necessary if downloading to an app that supports Readium LCP.
Once that is out of the way you can download your ebook:
- Open your web browser on your device
- Navigate to www.eBooks.com
- Press the "Sign in" link at the top of the page and sign in to your account
- Press the My eBooks / My Bookshelf link
- Depending on the view you have selected for your bookshelf you need to either tap on the cover of the ebook, or tap the "Read now" or "Read" button of the ebook you want to download
- On the next screen instead of pressing the green "Read Online" button you need to select a different option depending on whether you are using a Readium LCP compatible app, or an Adobe ID compatible app.
- For Readium LCP select the "Download to Windows or Mac" option under the heading "Other Ways to Read"
- For Adobe DRM select the "Some e-readers" link under the heading "Other Ways to Read"
- Scroll down and press the "Download your ebook" option (either step 2 or 3 depending on which option you selected previously), then press the button to download in ePub or PDF format (depending on which format is available for your ebook)
- Depending on your browser you may be asked to confirm you want to download the lcpl or the acsm file. Press Download
- Your browser will then download the file, press the file name and you should be asked what app you want to use to open the file. Select your app of choice
- The app should open and the ebook should download within the app (provided you have authorised the app prior to attempting to download). If it is a Readium LCP compatible app you will be asked to enter your LCP Passphrase / Reading Key, which will be visible on the download page
If using Chrome, a bar will appear at the bottom of the screen with an Open link. Press this and it will ask you which app you wish to use. Select your app of choice.
If using Safari, once the file downloads you need to tap the download icon at the top of the screen next to the address bar.
A little box will pop up and you need to press the file name. Then on the next screen press the icon in the top right (a box with an arrow point vertically out of it) to select which app you wish to use. Select your app of choice.
If you are using a different browser the process may be slightly different, but the basic steps are the same.
If you are having technical difficulties at any point please check our troubleshooter (selecting Adobe Digital Editions or Thorium Reader as your reader software, depending on what your app supports), or the ADE section or Thorium section of Help Centre. And of course you can contact our support team, who will be happy to help. Please do state what device you have, the browser you are using and the app you are trying to download to. Please also include the full text or screenshot of any error message you encounter.
Please do bear in mind that we are unable to provide the same level of support for third party apps as we do not have the same kind of access that we have for our own eBooks.com app.
