Please note that the new Online Reader is still in beta (still under development) so this guide may change as the Online Reader is updated.
The Online Reader works slightly differently on touch screen devices than it does on a computer, so both versions of the reader will be covered in this guide.
Interface
On all devices, in the top right of the reader, you will have access to the Read Aloud and the Reading Settings icons:
This will start the Read Aloud or text-to-speech (TTS) feature. Please note some publishers have not enabled Read Aloud for their ebooks. If this is the case selecting the read aloud icon will display the message "Read Aloud is not enabled for this ebook." The section being read will be highlighted in yellow, with the current word highlighted in orange. Note that the moving orange highlight currently doesn't work on some mobile devices. While the read aloud is active the icon will change to a pause icon. A TTS settings menu with options to change the playback rate and volume is available in the Reading Settings Panel. |
This will open the Reading Settings Panel at the top of the screen, or dismiss it if it is currently visible. If you have the Reading Settings Panel pinned at the top of the screen then this will have no effect until you unpin the Reading Settings Panel. |
All devices will also have access to the Progress Slider. To make the slider appear simply tap or click on the Settings icon. You can pin the slider, along with the settings panel, using the Pin icon.
This is the Progress Slider. Slide the blue dot along the line to jump to any part of the ebook. In PDF ebooks, as you are moving the slider, the current page number and the total number of pages will be displayed. If you are using an EPUB you may prefer to use the Table of Contents. |
The rest of the interface is comprised of two sections: a collapsible Reading Settings Panel at the top of the screen, and a collapsible Sidebar that will only be displayed on wider screens.
The Reading Settings Panel
This panel appears when you click or press the Settings icon. Select an icon in the control panel below to jump to the explanation of that icon's function.

Some table of contents will have sections within a chapter minimized to make it easier to navigate. select the + (plus) symbol to expand that part of the table of contents. You can then select the - (minus_ symbol to minimize it again. To close the Table of Contents sidebar select the X icon. Please note that if you are viewing the reader on a wider screen the Table of Contents icon will not be displayed in the Reading Settings Panel. You can access it via the Sidebar. |
This opens the Search sidebar. When the Search sidebar is open, enter your search term and select "Search" to see all the times that term appears within the ebook. Select a result to jump to it in the ebook. Each instance will be highlighted on the page. These highlights will remain visible, even if you close the Search sidebar. To remove them, either search for a new term, or select "Clear Highlights" in the Search sidebar. To close the Search sidebar select the X icon. Please note that if you are viewing the reader on a wider screen the Search icon will not be displayed in the Reading Settings Panel. You can access it via the Sidebar. |
