There are two possible causes for this error message. The first is that after downloading the ebook you have either renamed the ebook file, or moved it in to a different folder, or deleted it. So when you attempt to open the ebook from your Library in Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) the software cannot find the file where it was expecting it.
To resolve this the easiest method is simply to remove the ebook (right click on the cover image in your ADE Library and select "Remove from Library"), and then log in to your eBooks.com account and download it again. But if you do this any annotations (notes, bookmarks or highlighting) made in the original ebook file will be lost. If you need to retain these, then you need to open ADE and click File > Add to Library, then navigate to where you moved the ebook file (or the renamed file) and select it and click Open.
The second possible cause for this error is Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) needing to create a temporary folder in your Windows TEMP folder in order to download the ebook. But for some reason the permissions on your TEMP folder have been changed so it is read only. To resolve the issue please follow these steps:
- Navigate to "C:\Users\[[Name of your user account for that computer]]"
- Right click on the temp folder and select "Properties"
- Near the bottom there is a checkbox titled "Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)". Make sure this checkbox is unchecked
- Then click "OK"
Even if this fixes the issue it is possible that whatever changed the temp folder to read only could change the settings again, so if it reoccurs you may need to follow the above steps again to resolve the issue.
