This error message "E_IO_WRITE" (or "Error 2038") is normally encountered when a user is trying to transfer ebooks from Adobe Digital Editions (on their computer) to their ADE compatible ereader device (Nook, Kobo or similar). It means the ereader device does not have enough space left on it's hard drive to store a file as big as the one you are attempting to transfer.
The solution is to make some space on the ereader device by deleting some of the contents you already have on the device. But before doing so it is best to check to make sure this is the case.
You can check the file size of the ebook you want to transfer by doing the following:
- Click on the cover of the ebook in your ADE bookshelf to highlight it
- Then click on File > Show in Explorer (Show in Finder on Mac)
- This will open the folder on your computer where ADE stores the ebook files. The ebook you highlighted should be highlighted in the folder and it should show the size of the file in the "Size" column. This is the amount of space you need to have on your device.
You can then check the amount of free space on your ereader by doing the following:
For Windows:
- Plug your ereader device in to your computer
- Go to Start > My Computer
- Among the list of hardrives and other devices you should see your ereader listed. Right click on it and then click "Properties"
- You can then check the free space available by looking at the number labelled "Free space:". If it is not more than the size of the ebook then you know you need to make space on the device
For Mac:
- Plug your ereader device in to your computer
- Open "Finder"
- Under the heading Devices you should see your ereader listed. Right click on it and then click "Get Info"
- You can then check the free space available by looking at the number labelled "Available:". If it is not more than the size of the ebook then you know you need to make space on the device
Please note: If your available space is larger than the ebook file's size and it looks like space is not the issue, then it is possible the issue is caused by your firewall or anti virus software. Please try temporarily deactivating them and then try the transfer again (remember to reactivate them after).
If you are still receiving the error please contact our support team. Please quote the error message when doing so and the make and model of your ereader device.
