This error originally appeared to be a permissions issue that most commonly occurred when customers upgraded their PC to Windows 10. But it does rarely affect Mac users too.
The solution for PC users is fairly simple. Before opening the URL_Link.acsm file instead right click on the shortcut to Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) and select "Run as administrator". This seems to resolve the permissions issue. If this does not work please check you have the latest version of ADE installed and update if possible. Then make sure ADE is not being blocked by your firewall.
If this does not resolve the issue, or if you are a Mac user, the issue is likely caused by a problem when the ebook file was imported in to our file server. This then means when ADE opens the acsm file and tries to request the ebook from our server it cannot.
In order to fix this we need to reimport the ebook file and reset your download licence.
Please contact our support team, quoting the error message E_ADEPT_DOCUMENT_OPEN_ERROR and state the affected ebook (and the format).
Once we have fixed the issue we will ask you to clear your browser's cache / temporary internet files and retry the download.
