Normally this can happen after trying to open a particular acsm file. But after it occurs once it can prevent ADE from opening even when you are not trying to open that particular acsm file, locking you out of opening ADE again.
To resolve this delete the offending ebook file in Documents\My Digital Editions\ . When you open ADE next time your bookshelf will load but the file will show as "missing", instead of the whole application just locking up.
To remove the cover from your bookshelf, right click on the cover and select "Remove from Library", then click "Remove".
If you try downloading the ebook again and the same thing happens, it is likely there is something in the ebook that is causing ADE to crash.
If possible, the best solution is to switch to using Thorium Reader. It is newer, better, more reliable ebook reading software. Or you can read online using our Online Reader.
If that is not possible, please contact our support team. If you let us know which of your ebooks is causing the issue, we may be able to get the publisher to reissue a new ebook file to resolve the problem.
